Split Rock Lighthouse

I've seen a lot of lighthouses (really, a lot), but I've never been in one. First part, because they usually cost money which I don't always like to spend, and secondly, I'm rather afraid of heights. This time Mike and I went in a real live lighthouse. Mike said the Split Rock is rather famous so we absolutely needed to go in it and it's rather short in comparison to something like Big Sable and Little Sable, plus Mike got the college student discount.

The 5th order Fresnel light rotates by a pulley system that a volunteer dressed as a light keeper has to crank every hour or so. There are shades on the inside of the windows that used to be drawn during the day for fear that the sunlight might bounce off wrong from one of the glass pieces and start a forest fire. There are also brass vents all around the interior to regulate the inside temp. to outside temp.
One questionable feature that was added by the lighthouse historical group is barbed wire along the rail surrounding the cement area outside the lighthouse. Yes, I understand the need to prevent people from climbing over the wall and falling to their death, but I don't think sharp spikes of metal piercing you or your child's skin first is the best idea.

Morning. Duluth. Lake Walk. When people go out of town they will often venture to a new coffee place to try the atmosphere and experience something different. Mike and I did go to a local place on our previous visit...let's just say a hipster coffee house with a tuscan/ italian restaurant feel, I did not get...at all. So, this time we went to an old standby, Starbucks. I am on an iced tea kick...and black tea with a touch of sugar is perfect on the terrace over looking a lake when you're pretending to be a guest at a nice (and completely out of price range) hotel.

Duluth

Lake Superior Zoo 5 cent tour

Duluth isn't well known for it's zoo, and as Bits put it in words, "There was no penguin or dolphin," or zebra, giraffe, elephant, or gorillas; but our son had fun and I ended up with a new pair of earrings.

We had a great time in Duluth, but with little more than a couple photos to show because of my unprofessional job of dead camera batteries and no charger, you'll have to go to the city itself to experience it's awesomeness.

Superior Skipping Stones

I am proud to say I have learned the art of stone skipping. Yes, I still have some kerplunkers, but it was a day of double skippers and some special 5 skippers. Bits did his share of double skips, by taking two stones, one in each hand and splashing them. Mike, a master stone skipper, skipped his stones across the river to bounce back onto the opposite shore. Cool factor increased for him.


I collected pocketfuls of stones, with right size, shape, and weight appropriate for superb skipping, and later to be used in some of my "yup" pieces. I can skip stones, can you?
